There are moments in Orkney when time seems to slow down and the world feels wonderfully still. This was one of those evenings – after what has felt like weeks of relentless poor weather, it made it even more precious.
The wind had eased and the sky was clear all day with beautiful sunshine and the evening rewarded us with something pretty spectacular. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the evening unfolded into layers of crimson and amber, stretching across the sky and the over the water.
These are the moments, during harsh winters, that remind us why we live here, why we tolerate the bad weather and why people fall in love with this island. Whether you are visiting Orkney for the first time, or have called it home for years, a sunset like this never loses its magic. Sometimes they are hard earned, but maybe that’s what makes them so special. I’ve lived here my whole life, and I still step outside to take these in and appreciate how beautiful our island is.
